Weiss

Jul 20, 2009 7:37 am

Three Fixes for Microsoft's Bottom Line 'We' Want
Artwork: Chip Taylor
Microsoft's profits and revenues are down like everyone else's in this whirlwind economy, but don't cry too much for Redmond just yet. With the new Windows 7 and Office 2010 applications on the horizon, there are three key moves the company can make to ring up more sales and revenue.

How bad are things for Microsoft right now?

Well, they're still not too bad, all things considered. This Thursday, Microsoft is expected to report earnings of 36 cents per share on revenue of $14.38 billion, down from 46 cents a share on $15.84 billion in revenue one year ago. Still nothing to sneeze at and a long, long way from losing money, but dropping year-to-year revenue is not something successful companies like to see.

Try These on for Size

To fix this, Microsoft needs to take advantage of its new opportunities and get us all revved and excited again about its products. By doing so, the huge software maker could even help carry part of the U.S. economy on its back across the finish line to better days.

Here's where to start:

1) Don't be late with Windows 7. Bring it out as promised on October 22 this year. Not in December, like your big operating system delays in years past, which crushed holiday PC sales due to your foot-dragging. Nope, this time Microsoft has to get it right the first time and get it out the door right on time to prop up sales, consumer confidence and to prime the pump for new PC sales to consumers and businesses. Man, the economy could sure use a big boost like a successful and highly-anticipated Windows 7 release right now. No excuses, Redmond. Make it happen or you may not want to even look at what would likely be your dropping revenue and profit numbers for a while afterward.

2) Be sure and make the upcoming free Web version of Office 2010 work with the world-standard Open Document Format (ODF) and the open source OpenOffice and its related alternatives from Day 1. The rest of the world believes in ODF and its lovely file compatibility to make it much easier for users anywhere to share their documents without vendor lock-in and problems. You began working on this in earnest with Office 2007 Service Pack 2, but its time to really hit the ball a mile. No more half attempts just to try to score some points. Instead, make ODF compliance a key feature and watch Office 2010 head out of the sales park. Besides, imagine the goodwill generated by such a statement of cooperation. Just do it.

3) And the last item Microsoft needs to do has nothing to do with code. Instead, it has to do with its not-so-warm-and-fuzzy attitude toward consumers. It needs to be friendlier, with faster updates and security patch releases, and it needs to find more ways to continue the consumer-friendly, cheaper upgrade route for Windows 7, even though the first such program ended July 11. Making it cheaper and easier for consumers to get Windows 7 -- especially after making them have to put up with the peripherals-compatibility-challenged Windows Vista for the past couple years -- would be a smart move for revenue enhancement in the long run. One promising move is the recent announcement about the upcoming new Microsoft stores which will be opening across the nation. Taking a page from Apple's very successful retail stores, Microsoft can use the brick and mortar stores to fashion closer relationships with its users. And guess what, happy consumers spend money.

So, Redmond, are you listening? The economy is waiting.

* See more like this:
* microsoft,
* microsoft office,
* Windows 7,
* browser security

Mac Versus Windows: Just A Price Thing?

Posted by Dave Methvin, Apr 10, 2009 08:11 PM

If you listen to the recent critiques of Microsoft's ad campaigns, it seems like the fourth time is going to be the charm. First Microsoft delivered the Seinfeld-Gates disaster, then the "Mojave" and original "I'm a PC" snoozefests. This time around, though, Microsoft is gaining traction with the idea that Macs are overpriced and the "Apple Tax" is not worth paying. There's just one little problem with this approach: it belittles Microsoft's contribution to what makes a PC.

There have been three ads in this latest campaign so far. They all follow the same general recipe: An average computer user needs a computer, and Microsoft will pay for it if they can find one that meets their requirements for under a certain price point. In the first commercial, "Lauren" was looking for a notebook PC with a 17-inch screen for under $1,000. The second commercial featured "Giampaolo" who wanted an even beefier configuration for less than $1,500. The latest spot features "Lisa and Jackson" with another $1,500 budget to buy the computer of their dreams.

These ads focus almost exclusively on the hardware specs of the notebooks, although they occasionally make vague references to the kind of things the buyers want to do, like gaming. There's no mention of the role that Microsoft plays in the design of a PC. It's almost as if the operating system makes no difference. Yet we know it can make a big difference; look at the mayhem that ensued with the change from XP to Vista. Plus, if operating systems really don't matter, why do something like 80 percent of netbook users prefer XP to Linux?

It seems like Microsoft is playing a game of reputational chicken with these ads. Their message seems to be that computers are a commodity and the only questions are about things like screen size, hard drive capacity, and battery life. Windows doesn't matter. So folks, when you need a cute little netbook, go out and grab a Linux-based model; you won't pay an Apple tax or a Microsoft tax. If you want a really elegant example of industrial design at a price premium, buy a Mac. If you can't afford that, you can settle for a PC. I hear the hardware is a bargain, at least.

« Want VC Funding? It turns out
they're more a tool for corporate communications than a form of
personal expression. Not that anyone should be surprised by this.

Consider this sentence from a blog post attributed to Bryan Mawhinney,
a software engineer for Google Mobile: "For iPhone and Windows Mobile
devices, Google Sync allows you to get your Gmail contacts and Google
Calendar events onto your phone."

And compare it with this sentence, from a blog post attributed to
Marcus Foster, a product manager for Google Mobile: "For iPhone and
Windows Mobile devices, Google Sync allows you to get your Gmail
Contacts and Google Calendar events to your phone."

See the difference? Neither do I, because they're almost identical.
And the posts both talk about Google's "credo to launch early and
iterate," a strategy the company employs successfully and mentions
frequently.

That's not supposed to happen, Karen Wickre, a senior manager in
corporate communications at Google, told me during a phone
conversation. Google blog posts, she said, are often collaborations
between Google product team members, so some information may be
shared. But she said that multiple posts about the same product are
usually targeted at specific audiences, like advertisers, enterprise
customers, developers, or consumers.

Someone, it seems, was in a hurry and someone else missed the
duplication. Not really a big deal.

Now I'm not naive enough to imagine that Google simply lets its
employees blog without oversight. (The last time that happened (that
I'm aware of) was in 2007, when Google Health account planner Lauren
Turner was forced to apologize for a blog post condemning Michael
Moore's film Sicko.)

But it would be nice to be able to accept the idea of individual
authorship at face value. The conceit of an identifiable author, or
several, is what separates a blog from a press release or other form
of official memo.

Individual authorship offers the possibility, however remote, of
authenticity or, better still, something inflammatory or unexpected.
And having a name to tie to a quote helps journalists feel like
they're reporting, rather than being spoon-fed with vetted talking
points.

But of course blogs and corporate communications can be one and the
same, just as e-mailed comments from sources, particularly those
funneled through corporate communications people, may be more group
think than personal musing.

Really, what this minor slip-up tells me is that the term "blog" has
become meaningless. Or is it that the notion of individual authorship
isn't nearly as relevant in this Wikipedian world of collaboration?

You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. Bylines are bygones.
Mistakes were made.

Pay Per Click Jobs - Your Checklist To Finding The Right Job For You

by: Derek Rogers

When it comes to making a living online, the chances have never been brighter! You already see that there are plenty of people who are seeing a great deal of success when it comes to making money online, but what might not be immediately apparent is how you can join them. Search engine marketing, particularly through pay per click services, is becoming quite popular when it comes to earning a living from the comfort of your own home, but remember, you need to be critical of the opportunities that you will find. Take a look below for some tips that will steer you towards the right opportunity, and don't go forward until you can tick every single one off of your list.

Find out how much time you can devote to this opportunity.

The best opportunity for you will be one that will fit into the time that you have slotted for it. It doesn't matter how great an opportunity is if you are constantly trying to get more work, or it constantly expects more from you than you can give.

Think about the salary.

What are your current needs? Do you have a job that you are looking to get rid of, but does it currently pay the bills? Are you unemployed and need a situation fast? There is often a time period when search engine marketing opportunities and pay per click services will need to wait before they pay you. Ask how long it will be before you receive your first pay check and how much they think it will be.

Do you have the capabilities to do the job?

Think about your internet set up at home. Do you have a reliable connection and can you clock time on your own on the computer? Too many people need to fight for a turn to use the computer, and this can be quite detrimental to your plans. Take some time to really sort through your resources and what they will be for the foreseeable future. Think about any disruptions (visits, vacations, the busy time at your other job) and make sure you take them into consideration.

Do your research!

What do you know about the company that is hiring you? Do they have a good reputation online and what do people who have worked for them in the past say? Take some time to find out what people are saying in reviews and on forums about your new company. How much did the other people make, and were they paid in a regular and timely fashion? There are many points to consider when you are starting a new job, and you want to make sure that your newest opportunity is a good one.

By keeping to a checklist, you can make sure that you have criteria for judging the opportunities that you come across. Look at the blades
of the fan in the back of the computer. Also look at any vents. Is
there clusters of dust there? Is there grime caked on to it? If so,
the inside needs to be cleaned. If the fan blades are clean but it has
been several years since you have cleaned the motherboard or if the
computer is around cigarette smoke, it probably should be cleaned
anyway. Dust and particles in the air (like cigarette smoke) can build
up on the circuitry of the motherboard and cause it to heat up and/or
corrode.

The first thing that you need to do is unplug your computer. Then open
up the case to get access to the motherboard. Cases open differently.
If you don't know how to open your case, look on the back of your
computer along the edge for some screws. These screws may hold on side
panels or an upside down U shaped panel that covers the sides and top.
Removing the screws will allow you to take off the cover. Other cases
have the screws on the front of the computer. To get access to these
screws, you must first remove the front panel by pressing a hidden
latch. The cover is there to give easy access to the inside of your
computer, so if you look hard enough, you should be able to figure out
how to remove it.

Remember that if you touch anything on the motherboard, you should be
grounded by either touching the metal frame of the computer with your
other hand or by wearing a special grounding device.

The goal of cleaning the motherboard is to remove all dust and debris
from the motherboard and all components inside of the case. This can
be done using one of three methods.

The preferred method is to use a can of compressed air to blow it out.
Always hold the can in an up-right position to prevent the propellent
chemicals which can damage or corrode components from coming out. Dust
and dirt should be blown away from the motherboard and out of the
case.

Another way to remove dust is to use a vacuum. The common advice is to
only use a battery operated vacuum because an AC powered vacuum causes
static and static can ruin the motherboard. I have used an AC powered
vacuum (before I knew that it was not recommended) to clean my
motherboard many times and it has never caused any problems, but I may
have just been lucky. When using the vacuum, keep the nozzle a couple
of inches away from the motherboard or any other components so that it
does not come in contact with them and so that any small parts are not
sucked into the vacuum.

If you do not have a can of compressed air or a vacuum, you can use a
dry cloth and brush to clean the motherboard. Be careful not to
dislodge or break anything using this method.

While cleaning the motherboard, be careful not to unplug any cables or
connections or to dislodge any loose components, such as, jumpers.

Methodically clean the whole inside of the case going over all of the
motherboard from one end to the other and all other components. Don't
forget to clean the fans and heat sinks. Do not open up the power
supply box or stick anything in it beyond the fan. If you do, you
could get a shocking surprise and ruin your computer.

If your computer does not work when you put it back together,
something was obviously dislodged during the cleaning. Open the case
back up and push all connections and cards into their slots. Look for
anything that may have become disconnected.

Cleaning the motherboard is probably the most dangerous form of
cleaning but it is necessary to prevent an early death of your
computer.

About The Author
Ray Geide writes a free weekly newsletter called Ray's Computer Tips
and moderates a discussion board answering computer questions called
Computer Q&A.

He is an experienced computer programmer who has been writing
top-rated software for over a decade. It is so easy that you can do it right now. Pick up your keyboard, turn it over being careful not to press any keys, and shake it. See all of that stuff fall out? It is dirtier than you thought, isn't it? You can use one of the following methods to clean it further.

The Blow Method - You can buy cans of pressurized air at the computer department or computer store which are made especially for cleaning your computer. They usually have either a hose and nozzle or a tube extending from the nozzle. Hold the keyboard up vertically (that means that end of the keyboard is up and the other end is down), aim towards the keys and press the button. Keep blowing until all of the debris is blown out. Be sure to get around and in between all of the keys. This can be done with the computer on, but it is better if it is off so that you do not have to worry about pressing the keys and coming up with a page of aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa's.

The Vacuum Method - This is just like the Blow Method except that a vacuum is used instead of a can of pressurized air. It is quite simple. Just turn the vacuum on, pull out the hose, and run the nozzle over the keys. Before doing this make sure your keyboard does not have any loose pop off keys that could be sucked into the vacuum.

The Cotton Ball Method - This can be done in addition to the above methods and in lieu of the following methods. Take a cotton ball or cloth and wet it with rubbing alcohol. It should not be so wet that the alcohol runs down into the cracks of the keyboard. Wipe the tops and sides of the keys.

The Dishwasher Method - I hesitate to tell about this method because there is the possibility that it could fry your keyboard. When I had less experience with computers, I dunked my keyboard in a sink full of water to clean it. It did work afterwards, so I don't doubt those who say this method will not mess up your keyboard, but if it does, don't complain to me. I warned you. If your keyboard is not the standard membrane type of keyboard or if it is on a laptop, do not even think of trying this.

This is how you do it. Unplug the keyboard and place it face down in an empty dishwasher. Do not disassemble the keyboard and do not put it in a dishwasher that has dirty dishes in it. Some say to add soap, some say not to. Run the dishwasher through a regular cycle. Take the keyboard out, shake the water out, and stand it on end until it is completely dry (this may take several days). If it does not work after doing this, it may not be dry. Let it stand another week and try it again. If it still does not work, I warned you.

The Disassembly Method - This is the most thorough method, but it should not be done on laptop keyboards or non-standard non-membrane keyboards.

Turn off the computer and unplug the keyboard. Turn the keyboard upside down. You may want to get two books or short boards to place the keyboard on. Position them so that they hold up the keyboard on the edges when it is turned over. This should leave the keys dangling and not touching the books or the floor. This is especially needed when the keyboard's back is off; otherwise the keys will be lifted out of their position by the floor (or whatever surface it is laying on).

Get a screwdriver and remove all of the screws from the back of the keyboard. Lay the keyboard down on the books and carefully remove the back.

Take everything apart and clean thoroughly. It is better to take the keys out one at a time and clean them so that you do not put them back in the wrong place. Wipe each one down with a wet cloth and then with a dry cloth. Any keys that may be hard to put back in, can be cleaned in place without removing them. Wipe around the keys as they sit in place and blow any debris out with your lungs (using compressed air or a vacuum may upset the keys). If you are really brave, you can remove all of the keys at once and give the frame a good wipe down too.

Do a once over and make sure that you have cleaned everything. Then reassemble it all.

Don't forget the keyboard's cable. Wrap a wet cloth around it and wipe it down. It may have an accumulation of grime that needs to be scrubbed off. Also if any of the letters on the keys have rubbed off, you can use a fine point permanent marker to draw the letter back on the key.

Use these cleaning methods and your keyboard will last a long time and be something you can be proud of.

About The Author
Ray Geide writes a free weekly newsletter called Ray's Computer Tips and moderates a discussion board answering computer questions called Computer Q&A.

He is an experienced computer programmer who has been writing top-rated software for over a decade. One teenager has, in fact, earned $5,000 a month just from
making posts on his blog! Of course, not every blogger is this lucky.
It does take some skill, and some luck to make money from blogging.
What it also takes is some knowledge of how exactly to generate income
just by posting blogs. In this newsletter, we will go over three
specific methods of making money on your blog: Adsense, Pay Per Lead,
and Affiliate Links.

So how exactly do I make money on my blog?

You do it by working with another company that wants to use your blog
as a form of advertising. It sounds like selling out, right? Not
exactly. The advertising can be as in your face or subtle as you want.
And it can still make you money, provided you have enough visitors to
your blog.

What is Adsense?

Adsense is a program offered by Google. The program, if installed,
will display ads provided by Google.

How do I get Adsense?

You'll need to go to Google.com, first. At the bottom of the screen is
a link for "Advertising Programs". Click on that. Then click on the
link for "Adsense". Scroll down on the page that comes up and click
"Click Here To Apply!" You then fill out the form with information
about yourself. After 12-48 hours, Google will notify you via email
whether or not your site has been accepted. When you've been accepted,
set up your ads by doing either of the following:

1. If your blog is hosted on Blogger.com, you can set up your AdSense
ads by going to your profile, selecting settings>template>add an
element. Then select AdSense and login with your account info. Next,
you'll configure your ads and save the template. That's it.

2. If you are self-hosting your blog, you'll have to set up AdSense in
more of a manual way. You'll create your ads(which can be as small or
as tall as you want) and then copy the HTML/Javascript code Google
gives you. Then you'll paste it into your blog(on the left, right, or
top of the screen).

For the first few days, the ads displayed by Google will be Public
Service Announcements. After the ads have been up a few days, though,
the ads will switch to ads that are relevant to your blog.

How does Adsense work?

Every time a visitor clicks an Adsense ad, you get a little bit of
money(usually around 30-60 cents). The amount you get for each ad
clicked depends on the number of unique visitors you receive on your
blog. The more visitors, the more money that can be earned.

Google will then send a check or pay you through Paypal once you've
made at least $100 from the ads.

It is important to remember that Google will penalize you if you click
your own ads, or if you ask visitors specifically to click ads. So
don't do that!

Pay Per Click

Pay Per Click is basically just like AdSense, except you don't just
work with Google—you work with multiple companies. BidVertiser is one
such company you can sign up with to do Pay Per Click advertising.

How do I get Pay Per Click

You sign up with a site like Bidvertiser and then follow their
instructions to set up the Pay Per Click ads on your site.

How does Pay Per Click work?

It works by paying you money each time someone clicks an ad that you
display. You won't get paid for multiple clicks from the same user in
the same visitor, nor will you get paid for someone simply visiting
your site. You only get paid for legitimate clicks.

Affiliate Links

Affiliate links are basically links which people pay you for.
Companies will actually pay owners of popular blogs to post links on
their blog. You can do as much Affiliate linking as you want.

How do I get Affiliate Links?

You can get Affiliate links by searching for "Affiliate Link Programs"
on the internet. Once you find an Affiliate link program that looks
good to you, sign up for it. Then you can follow their instructions
for putting the link(s) on your blog.

How do Affiliate Links work?

Like the other two methods mentioned above, Affiliate links work by
paying you money each time they are clicked. You get paid for each
click per unique visitor.

So that's it. There's three legitimate ways to make money from
blogging. It is important to keep in mind that the amount of money you
are able to make depends on how many visitors your blog draws. If you
draw a lot, you'll make a lot. If not, the money you earn will be
modest. Germs live on your hands and fingers. When you type, many of them jump on to the keyboard. When someone else types on your keyboard, those germs transfer to their fingers. Or when you later type on the same keyboard, those germs reconquer your fingers. Regularly disinfecting the keyboard can prevent this.

To disinfect the keyboard, turn off the computer. Then spray disinfectant on a cloth. Be sure to use disinfectant and not just any type of cleaner because not all cleaners disinfect. Also do not spray the disinfectent directly on the keys. Spray it on the cloth. Wipe down the top and sides of the keys. Give the keys a few minutes to dry off before turning the computer back on.

Now that you know how to do it, you should make it a regular practice to disinfect the keyboard. It's one step towards a healthier you.

So you have your keyboard disinfected and life is great. Then your child spills koolaide all over it. What do you do? There are certain steps that you should take when something, like pop, beer, wine, coffee, milk, or kool-aide, is spilled on the keyboard.

The first thing to do is immediately unplug the keyboard from the back of the computer and turn the keyboard over so that its keys are down. This will allow the liquid to drain out. You will probably want to put a cloth under the keyboard or at least make sure that the surface you have put it on is washable.

Then use the mouse to shut down Windows and turn off the computer (this is important because later you will have to plug the keyboard back into the computer and you should never plug any device into a computer while it is on).

While the keyboard is upside down use a cloth to dry as much of the liquid off as you can. If you have a can of compressed air or a vacuum, while the keyboard is upside down blow or vacuum it out. Then let the keyboard set upside down for at least a night so that it can adequately dry out.

If the liquid that spilled on it was sticky, you may want to follow the extensive cleaning procedure explained in the next article, How to Clean your Keyboard - Part 2.

Liquid spilled on a laptop keyboard can easily reach the hard drive, so turn it over immediately and leave it in that position until it dries.

Keyboards are quite resilient and so it should work when you turn it on again. But if not, another attribute of keyboards is that they are cheap and so it won't cost too much to buy another one.

With these pointers in mind and a quick reaction, you just may save your keyboard from total destruction the next time it gets coated with coffee.

About The Author
Ray Geide writes a free weekly newsletter called Ray's Computer Tips and moderates a discussion board answering computer questions called Computer Q&A.

He is an experienced computer programmer who has been writing top-rated software for over a decade. Copyright will be a "dead duck," virtual reality sanctuaries will provide an escape from cyberspace, and viciousness will prevail over civility.

These are some of the predictions offered by "experts" in "Future Of The Internet III," a study released on Monday by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

It's not immediately clear what Pew believes constitutes expertise in events that haven't happened.

The Internet of 2020 sounds a lot like it is today, full of potential and pitfalls, only with greater extremes.

The Pew study predicts that mobile devices will be the primary tool for connecting to the Internet 12 years hence, which isn't really going out on a limb.

It foresees a world where the transparency of people and organizations will increase, but human nature -- personal integrity, social tolerance, and forgiveness -- won't change. No surprise there.

It anticipates a time when voice recognition and touch interfaces become more prevalent. Again, this is hardly an unexpected prognostication. Apple with its iPhone and iPod Touch could realize this prediction through its own devices, were other vendors not also headed in this direction.

"Those working to enforce intellectual property law and copyright protection will remain in a continuing 'arms race,' with the 'crackers' who will find ways to copy and share content without payment," the study says.

Sixty percent of the experts interviewed disagreed that content control through copyright-protection technology would dominate the Internet of 2012.

But the majority view appears to discount the popularity of the locked-down iPhone ecosystem. Given the extent to which Apple's competitors in the mobile arena have committed to copying the iTunes App Store model, it wouldn't be surprising if mobile customers traded freedom for the promise of phone security. That might keep copyright alive until nano-assemblers make it feasible to copy objects on an atomic level.

The Internet : What's all the fuss?

Written by: Roderick Hames
Computer Science/Business Education Teacher
Copyright@1988

Introduction:
Unless you never watch TV, listen to a radio, or read, you almost certainly have heard about the Internet or know something about it. Very few people have never heard of the Internet; however most people have either used the Internet occasionally or frequently. It doesn't take much to know that the Internet has attracted an enormous amount of attention the past few years.

What would cause thousands of companies, millions of people and virtually every major country in the world to invest millions of dollars into the Internet? An even better question is what would caused something that operated for nearly 20 years without much public interest to grow to such overwhelming popularity in 6 short years? What truly is all this fuss about?

Some believe it's the speed and wide variety of information found on the net that has made it so popular. Others say it's the ease one can access and publish information on the Internet while others just believe it is a fad. No matter what people say, they can't deny the Internet's tremendous growth rate and current level of popularity in this and other countries.

Who uses it?

In fact, if you have not heard or browsed the Internet, it is not the fault of the Internet. It just isn't that complicated or isolated. Furthermore, anyone with a computer, phone line, modem , and an ISP can connect and even publish on the Internet. However to publish you will have to get to know some Basic Terms such as HTML, HTTP, URL, and others. From young to old, millions of companies, organization, and individuals have published with great success.

Just look around. As my mom says, "Everything has gone http://www.crews.org/curriculum/ex/compsci/articles/internet/www.html crazy." Don't get me wrong the Internet has its complex side. It is a well thought out network with lots of technical languages and protocols that make it work. But that complexity has simply made it easier for the average person to use. From doctors, lawyers, professors, scientist to hobbyist, housewives and elementary students all have found something of value on the Internet .

Its Benefits:

The Internet's speed, vast resources, and its ability to directly communicate with others are its greatest benefits. Because the Internet uses the quickness of computers to transmit its data, information can travel at tremendous speeds. Speed is not the only benefit. The Internet uses hundreds of thousands of computers all connected to each other to store vast amounts of information. And finally, because the Internet allows for individuals to have specific electronic mail addresses, people can easily communicate with one another.

The Internet is considered by many to be superior to the best and biggest libraries in the county. This superiority exists primarily due to the thousands of organizations, companies and individuals publishing on the Internet. With such ease of publishing and the wide variety of publishers, there is almost no subject left off the Internet. The Internet's ability to deliver this vast amount of information has drawn even more users. Not having to wait for a book, newspaper, or magazine publisher to review and send an author's manuscript to a printing press to be bound or printed eliminates the time it would normally take to publish something. Instead of reading a medical breakthrough in next month's journal, it can be published on the Internet instantly. A breaking news event can be published almost immediately after the event occurs. People don't have to wait until the morning paper to read about an event. This part of the Internet alone has helped make the Internet a technological breakthrough.

Even finding not so current information can be a breeze using the Internet. Driving to a library and searching for possibly hours just to find some specific information is a task many of us have experienced. With the Internet you can sit in the convenience of your home and search (surf) to find information faster than going to a library.

Theoretically, the information on the Internet can travel at the speed of light (186,000 miles/sec.). Realistically, we know that this speed is nearly impossible due mainly to the large number of people using the Internet, and the limitation of the phone system. However the Internet's speed is much faster than traditional means of gathering news and reporting information.

Communication is a huge benefit of the Internet. Many people use the Internet to simple send messages and nothing else. Whether it be by news groups, chat rooms, or the most popular method E-mail, communicating over the Internet has developed vast appeal and usage. Millions of people around the globe use E-mail to communicate everyday. They all place great value on the convenience of sending and receiving E-mail. I am one of its biggest fans. E-mail can be sent and retrieved by its recipient almost instantly. The message never has to be printed or physically mailed to get to it's destination. Furthermore, the cost is considerably less than a thirty-two cent stamp and is delivered a lot faster.

With the invention of the Internet phone, some people can now even talk across the Internet just like on a voice phone but without paying long distance charges. It is just a fact; the time it takes to send a letter or reply to a phone message is no match for E-mail's speed and convenience.

How did the Internet begin?

The Internet's history is not very complicated nor that long. It may surprise you to know that the Internet began 25 years ago as an experiment of the U.S. Defense Department. In fact, it was not originally designed for the public's personal use. The original goal of the Internet was to establish a system to safeguard the exchange of information among different government agencies in the event of war. With no one computer or person controlling the Internet, the enemy could not destroy our means of communication with just one military strike. Today this unique feature of the Internet remains constant and part of its success. No one person or organization controls or heads the Internet. It is basically hosted by thousands of individual computers that have registered with the NSF (National Science Foundation) for an Internet address.

In 1991 there were only 100 host computers or sites. Today this number exceeds half a million and is constantly growing. The Internet has certainly seen tremendous growth in just the past 3 to 6 years.

What really caused the Internet's tremendous growth spurt was the invention of something that made the Internet both easy to use and easy to transmit multimedia (graphics, sound, and video). The invention was a software product now known as a browser . In 1991 in an European physics lab, an invention was made that enabled words in a sentence to be clicked on and an action then performed. This invention today is know as hypertext . Hypertext is when words or pictures are clicked on that takes the place of typing commands into the computer. This single feature made the Internet easier to use. With this invention came new users from small kids to senior adults who felt comfortable riding the information super highway. This has forever changed the way average people use the Internet. Today we find people reading magazines, buying products, listening to radio stations, talking to friends, writing messages, playing games, even watching video all through the use of the Internet.

Conclusion

With almost each passing day, a new product or tool is invented or improved upon to help people use the Internet. However millions of people still are not using the Internet. This is due mainly to the lack of either a computer or an Internet service provider. Nevertheless the Internet continues to surprise even the experts with its tremendous growth and popularity. Its tremendous influence on today's society is certain to be felt for many years to come.

A History Into Microsoft Products

by: Mehmet Onatli
http://www.registryheal.com/

Microsoft Windows is the name of several families of software operating systems by Microsoft. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment named Windows in November 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUIs). The most recent client version of Windows is Windows Vista. The current server version of Windows is Windows Server 2008.

Windows 1.0 (1985)

The first version of Windows provided a new software environment for developing and running applications that use bitmap displays and mouse pointing devices. Before Windows, PC users relied on the MS-DOS® method of typing commands at the C prompt (C:\). With Windows, users moved a mouse to point and click their way through tasks, such as starting applications.

In addition, Windows users could switch among several concurrently running applications. The product included a set of desktop applications, including the MS-DOS file management program, a calendar, card file, notepad, calculator, clock, and telecommunications programs, which helped users, manage day-to-day activities.

Windows 2.0 (1987)

Windows 2.0 took advantage of the improved processing speed of the Intel 286 processor, expanded memory, and inter-application communication capabilities made possible through Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). With improved graphics support, users could now overlap windows, control screen layout, and use keyboard combinations to move rapidly through Windows operations. Many developers wrote their first Windows based applications for this release.

Windows 3.0 (1990)

The third major release of the Windows platform from Microsoft offered improved performance, advanced graphics with 16 colors, and full support of the more powerful Intel 386 processor. A new wave of 386 PCs helped drive the popularity of Windows 3.0, which offered a wide range of useful features and capabilities, including:

Program Manager, File Manager, and Print Manager.

A completely rewritten application development environment.

An improved set of Windows icons.

Windows NT 3.1 (1993)

When Microsoft Windows NT® was released to manufacturing on July 27, 1993, Microsoft met an important milestone: the completion of a project begun in the late 1980s to build an advanced new operating system from scratch.

Windows NT was the first Windows operating system to combine support for high-end, client/server business applications with the industry's leading personal productivity applications.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (1993)

A superset of Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 added peer-to-peer workgroup and domain networking support. For the first time, Windows based PCs were network-aware and became an integral part of the emerging client/server computing evolution.

Windows for Workgroups was used in local area networks (LANs) and on standalone PCs and laptop computers. Look at the blades of the fan in the back of the computer. Also look at any vents. Is there clusters of dust there? Is there grime caked on to it? If so, the inside needs to be cleaned. If the fan blades are clean but it has been several years since you have cleaned the motherboard or if the computer is around cigarette smoke, it probably should be cleaned anyway. Dust and particles in the air (like cigarette smoke) can build up on the circuitry of the motherboard and cause it to heat up and/or corrode. The first thing that you need to do is unplug your computer. Then open up the case to get access to the motherboard. Cases open differently. If you don't know how to open your case, look on the back of your computer along the edge for some screws. These screws may hold on side panels or an upside down U shaped panel that covers the sides and top. Removing the screws will allow you to take off the cover. Other cases have the screws on the front of the computer. To get access to these screws, you must first remove the front panel by pressing a hidden latch. The cover is there to give easy access to the inside of your computer, so if you look hard enough, you should be able to figure out how to remove it. Remember that if you touch anything on the motherboard, you should be grounded by either touching the metal frame of the computer with your other hand or by wearing a special grounding device. The goal of cleaning the motherboard is to remove all dust and debris from the motherboard and all components inside of the case. This can be done using one of three methods. The preferred method is to use a can of compressed air to blow it out. Always hold the can in an up-right position to prevent the propellent chemicals which can damage or corrode components from coming out. Dust and dirt should be blown away from the motherboard and out of the case. Another way to remove dust is to use a vacuum. The common advice is to only use a battery operated vacuum because an AC powered vacuum causes static and static can ruin the motherboard. I have used an AC powered vacuum (before I knew that it was not recommended) to clean my motherboard many times and it has never caused any problems, but I may have just been lucky. When using the vacuum, keep the nozzle a couple of inches away from the motherboard or any other components so that it does not come in contact with them and so that any small parts are not sucked into the vacuum. If you do not have a can of compressed air or a vacuum, you can use a dry cloth and brush to clean the motherboard. Be careful not to dislodge or break anything using this method. While cleaning the motherboard, be careful not to unplug any cables or connections or to dislodge any loose components, such as, jumpers. Methodically clean the whole inside of the case going over all of the motherboard from one end to the other and all other components. Don't forget to clean the fans and heat sinks. Do not open up the power supply box or stick anything in it beyond the fan. If you do, you could get a shocking surprise and ruin your computer. If your computer does not work when you put it back together, something was obviously dislodged during the cleaning. Open the case back up and push all connections and cards into their slots. Look for anything that may have become disconnected. Cleaning the motherboard is probably the most dangerous form of cleaning but it is necessary to prevent an early death of your computer.

A HREF="http://www.ezinfocenter.com/10410471/MRA">

Welcome

Welcome to the Computer & Internet Blog , the blog that inform you about hardware , software and network for the computer technology.
Hardware inform you about asembling the component computer , upgrading the computer after the using the computer and repairing the computer if that trouble. The other information in this blog that is PC development, designing of PC system, specification of microprocessor, motherboard and bus, bios, memory, IDE interface, SCSI interface, magnetic storage, harddisk storage, floppy disk drive storage, high removable storage, optic storage, video hardware, audio hardware, interface I/O, powersupply and chasing
Software inform you about intall the computer with using software like Microsoft and Linux .
